History of Odin's Fund
In 1998 Ithaca Police Department's Officer Ray Schweiger asked Dr. McNamara for some basic information about how to care for his K-9 partner Odin in an emergency. Fellow K-9 handlers in his department and in nearby jurisdictions also wanted to hear what Dr. McNamara had to say - and from this initial interest, Dr. McNamara's K-9 first aid course took root.
When Dr. McNamara learned that not all K-9 handlers receive basic
first aid training to ensure the health and safety of their working
dogs, and that many agencies lack funding for this critical component
of their canine programs, he resolved to meet the need. The Organization
for Dogs in Need (ODIN's Fund), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, was founded
in 2000 to provide in-depth first aid training for police canine
handlers, first aid guides, first aid kits for K-9 teams, and other
vital safety equipment. |
